Old Before My Time: Hayley Okines’ Life with Progeria

The extraordinary life of Britain’s 100-year-old teenager

Hayley Okines is like no other 13-year-old schoolgirl.

Born with the rare genetic condition progeria, she ages eight times faster than the average person. In medical terms her body is like that of a 100-year-old woman. Yet she faces her condition with immense courage and a refreshing lack of self-pity.

In Old Before My Time, Hayley reflects on her unusual life. Share Hayley’s excitement as she travels the world meeting her pop heroes Kylie, Girls Aloud and Justin Bieber and her sadness as she loses her best friend to the disease at the age of 11.

Now as she passes the age of 13 – the average life expectancy for a child with progeria  – Hayley and her mum Kerry talk frankly about her hopes for the future and her pioneering drug trials in America which could unlock the secrets of ageing for everyone…

I want to meet you. I want to touch your life just as you touched mine with your amazing story. I want to be more than just another fan. And I know that thats all I am-just another fan.
I already told you I love your book. I really wish I could meet you, but location proves an issue with that. However, I am just a person far away that wants to meet the person that brought sunshine into their lives.
So Hayley, I just want to say that you are an amazing person with fans and friends and all of that good stuff, while I’m just a girl who is a fan. I am not trying to pity myself, I’m trying to tell you that you are an amazing person. Keep bringing sunshine to the world.

  10. Hayley, you are a role model! When i was 16 years old I had a problem in the heart and i could not do what my friends were doing. I asked to me, why it was happening to me? Then I realized that I prefer that It happens to me and not to any other person who does not have the support of his family and friends that it is fundamental, in addition i noticed that it made me more strong. It made me think and see that the people worry and problems are done by things that do not worth it. See you smile gives me strength to continue. I want to read your book, but here in Argentina i can’t buy it… Keep fighting

  11. Hey Hayley! Your story reminds me of a girl named Dyamond Ott. She passed away at the age of 18 last December. She didnt have the same thing you have but she was still strong and determined just like you. It would be so cool to meet you. I just read your story and you have already inspired me. I would love to read your book! It sounds like it would be interesting to read. From the pictures i have seen of you, you are a gorgeous girl with a strong heart and soul. Im glad you have younger siblings and a good family to help support you. I know you probably have a lot of people to talk to but I would love it if you replied! Stay strong. You can do anything you want to if you just keep trying!
